I've done a few baileys; mainly to get bees onto a different size of comb. As Gerry says, if you stick the queen above the excluder with, say, just foundation for company, she isn't going to be happy. The two (nucs) I have on the go now were fed syrup above the top box until comb was drawn and the queen started to lay there. Then the queen excluder goes on to keep her upstairs - I did it this week. In a week or so I will put them on a top entrance with the expectation (hope) that the old frames will be empty of food by the time the brood has emerged.

To remove old comb, now is a good time for me - the bees have little food and some of the brood frames are empty :(
